The Pomodoro technique has changed my life – and it can do wonders for yours, too. It’s a method of breaking down your work into blocks of 25 minutes at a time, followed by 5-minute breaks, which I like to lavishly refer to as “naplets”.
During each Pomodoro 25-minute session, I make it my mission to be staying focused and highly productive before taking that brief bit of self-care with the 5-minute break.
Here are a few things I make sure of before diving into a Pomodoro session. I make a mental reminder of dedicating 25 minutes to one task at hand and not allow myself to be distracted. Don’t think too much about completing all the tasks but rather think about putting in 25 minutes of focused work. To be honest it is not the easiest thing to achieve at the start but I remind myself of the end goal that I am trying to achieve.
Before I start my session I keep my phone away and on silent to avoid distractions, I close any unwanted browsers or tabs to keep my eyes only on the required stuff. Yes, get your water bottle and keep it next to you and do everything possible to avoid getting out of your seat. You may choose to close the doors /windows or curtains to avoid distractions, yes you will need to isolate yourself for a brief period of time.
Its the first 5-7 minutes that are your enemies – your mind will go on an internal battle between work and distractions also known as the ‘monkey mind’. Once you brave through the first 5-7 minutes you allow your mind to move into a more focused space, this often is reffered to as the ‘flow state’ or ‘zone’. It is at this stage that deep work really gets done and it will surprise you at the amount of work that you can get done in this flow state.

Tips for Optimizing Your Pomodoro session
Why settle for an average Pomodoro session? – when you can take it to another level? Here are a few tips and add-ons to optimize your Pomodoro.
1. Pick the right background music – something with a nice tempo and with no lyrics, you can choose an instrumental track so it won’t distract you. There is a ton of music you can find on almost all music streaming platforms that cater to this need. You will find music in almost all genres that you like from classical – Vivaldi, Mozart, Chopin, Haydn, and many more to more modern styles like lo-fi, indie, folk, acoustic, chillout, pads, soaking music, etc.
Here I have listed some of my favorite tracks across different genres to help you get started. Pick according to your mood.

2. Work with ambient nature sounds: Ambient sounds can have a subconscious effect on your mind and help you bring focus to your work. These sounds are supposed to be played at low volumes in the background.

3. Use a physical timer to track your time: The use of an actual physical timer makes a huge difference in helping you stay focused. It shows your seriousness and makes a psychological note of the time elapsed.

4. Have a clean comfortable work environment: Working on a clean clutter free desk motivates the mind for work. So stop being lazy and make sure you organize your workspace. The lesser things you have on your desk the easier it will be for you to organize them. Having a comfortable place to work will greatly allow you to put in more focused hours of work.
So get comfy, find your ideal workspace and make sure you have everything you need before your Pomodoro session starts. And lastly, set up a reward system for yourself – nothing like allowing yourself that sweet treat at the very end of your Pomodoro session so you can zone in on working productively all those minutes prior!
5. Mental discipline: getting yourself to work may mean a constant mental conversation with yourself. It requires a certain level of mental discipline and attention span which you have to build slowly and consistently over time. Work on your mind so it can work on you. There are many books on this topic that you can benefit from. Ultimately they all say the same thing that there is no shortcut to hard work.
6. Set a reward system for yourself: Delay the pleasure of scrolling on your cell phone and checking your Instagram, Facebook, or any other app that you are addicted to. Reward your mind for these small achievements by giving it a sweet treat or an activity that you love and enjoy.
Make sure you don’t overindulge in these activities and keep it short for 5 -7 mins so that you can get back to your next Pomodoro session of 25 minutes. if you spend more than 7 mins on regular breaks it will break your flow state and you won’t feel like getting back to work.
